All millets, like most grasses, shed their seeds and propagate / perpetuate without needing human intervention. Though the time taken to achieve such a state can be fairly long, the seeds that are so developed shall be much better adapted to local environment than ones that are cultivated with more human intervention. And when practiced in conjunction with some particular practices, this can be utilized to decrease the work on the farm and increase agro-bio diversity.
But most millets in the farms and the market today are developed as seasonal crops.

Barnyard millet (Tamil:kuthira vaali) , (Malayalam : Kavadappul) . Proso millet(Tamil : Panivaragu), The Tamil name may be originated from the botanical name Panicum or from the Tamil word “pani” meaning snow. So adopt the Tamil name!

Dear Mohan, thank you for sharing the names of some of the millets. With the many interactions between languages, I’m not sure what was adopted from which language.

Ho, It is grown in India allright! Till 80’s it was the staple food of draught prone parts of east coast of A.P. Even it is cultivated there, though as extensively as it used to be. It is called Varigalu in Telugu. Even now during the Sankranthi season varigannam is made as part of the festival with new proso millets.
